Descriptin Wireless traffic demand is growing exponentially and satisying this demand means increasing the density points of access and combining different wireless technologies. Mobile network operators have already started to push for denser, heterogeneous deployments; however, current technology needs to steer towards efficiency, to avoid unsustainable energy consumption and network performance implosion due to interference. While some efforts have already been devoted to evolving the technology, these efforts mostly take a restricted PHY perspective and do not consider higher-layer mechanisms, which are required to fully optimise global performance.
On the other hand, in CROWD a paradigm shift is investigated, which exploits the network cooperation, dynamic network functionality configuration, and advanced capacity tuning. The project's idea is to propose a local controller for each area covered by a technology, e.g., LTE, WiFi, and a regional controller to optimise the radio resources availability in term of energy efficiency and capacity improvement. This is achieved through the realisation of a Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach for wireless networks: the controllers exploit southbound interfaces towards WiFi, LTE and backhauling links to i) collect real-time measurements and ii) issue commands to the network devices; on the other hand, the controllers expose northbound interfaces towards applications acting as policy decision points.
